Fusion cookery is something that BluesBunny tries to avoid when he dining out. The term generally means the chef cannot make up his mind what to cook. This fine 10 track album from Boo Boo Davis fuses the Delta blues styles with modern beats to interesting effect. There is no doubt whatsoever that he knows what he is trying to achieve.
"Who Stole the Booty" thunders out the speakers driven by his impassioned vocals. The autobiographical "Drew, Mississippi" is more conventional but still compelling. "Tryin' to Survive" is another song straight from the heart. Ending with the haunting "Standing in the Cottonfields", the album gives you the feeling of experiencing the whole history of the blues without sounding at any time dated. Perhaps it is only by recording for smaller record labels that a musician can take his heritage and turn it into something fresh. Credit should also be given to the contribution of producer Ramon Goose.
So the blues ain't dead. They have adapted to the times. Purists may shy away from this album but that would be a mistake. Boo Boo Davis has produced something original and that's the real deal. Now go buy it and play it loud!
