Sometimes you hear some music that just can’t be properly experienced in the cold light of reality. Kev Denny’s “Secret Trip” EP contains such music and it, accordingly, requires fluorescent street lights and a strong desire to take the train to Largs and have an ice cream (even if it is half past eleven at night).

Stylistically, our Mr Denny seems to have developed a fondness for the kind of west coast (of America) beach pop that would get him a cuddle from the Aquadolls but has infused it with the kind of dreamlike disassociation that would likely entitle him to a free cavity search from the boys in blue.

So, drifting away we go with “The Growing Sun”, and indeed the title song, mixing simplicity, wistfulness and persistence into an anthem for those lost in the space between the cracks in the pavement. “Winter Moon”, on the other hand, is a rather more aggressive proposition yet it too ends up being enchanted by the melody of the magic guitar into dancing itself into a circle.

Whilst “Secret Trip” might not make the problems of the world fade away, it will at least provide a more than adequate distraction from your woes.

The EP is available from Bandcamp.
