Woke up this morning, pressed the play button and found myself back in the nineties and listening, once again, to the future with the Britpop inspired indie rock sounds of Milkshed and their “Mud” EP filling my ears.
Now, I am not averse to some polished indie rock if some imagination has been added to raise the creators of such sounds above the expectations of the genre. These four songs even feature lyrics that are reminiscent of that curiously literate Britpop style even if complexity was never going to be the name of the game as Milkshed continuously demonstrate the kind of determination that takes every opportunity to ride the song straight to the chorus. There are, of course, plenty of guitars along on said ride and, with imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, every riff sounds like a friend on parole from your father’s record collection but who cares about that as the eminently polished production sweeps everything over your ears.
Milkshed - Cam Gallaher, Jake Tulley and Alf Grey – undoubtedly have some good moves and pulling things from the past certainly isn’t a crime yet, despite applying the maximum volume test, the stamp of individuality seemed to have gone missing. Festival audiences will no doubt disagree as this kind of energetic, upbeat and riff heavy music goes down especially well with copious quantities of beer and mud.
