With a tag line like “six songs of sad power pop”, it does not take much in the way of Sherlock Holmes style deductive reasoning to work out that Trequartista are likely from Scotland and to also call their little six song album “Professional Debut” provides further evidence that they are infused with the kind of deadpan humour that could only be found in dear old Glasgow town.
This four strong, and probably organic, musical machine do indeed purvey a nice line in downbeat power pop with occasional excursions down into the deep well of melancholy for a drink of lyrical motivations. The vocals, whilst probably imperfect by design, fit right into this band’s groove with some distinctly melodic guitar work making an effective counterpoint to the grey clouds that are permanently overhead.
As is my wont, I tried really hard to dislike Trequartista but, when it comes down to it, these six songs deliver what you would expect in an efficient and effective manner and those of you with imperfect or incomplete beards will easily relate to all that is here.
