I often wonder where the protest songs of today would be found if, indeed, such a thing would, or even could, still exist and it was therefore somewhat of a surprise to find one in amongst the heartfelt sentimentality that powers Hannah Scott’s EP “Threads”.
It is not often that I feel shortchanged when listening to music yet it was that very feeling that overcame me when these five songs came to an end. I wanted more and I wished with all my wallet that there was more musical sustenance that Hannah Scott could have brought to her party for one. Purveying quality over quantity and as something of a white collar heroine, she takes a literate but really rather affecting approach to telling tales of the times that are today with “In Your Light” being more than enough to tug the heartstrings of even the most emotionally bereft and “Sitting In The Dark” easily qualifying as a song that way too many of us can relate to as we descend from the dream to the servitude of near infinite debt.
As someone so deeply and obviously infused with sentimentality, Hannah Scott has always seemed to me to have decided to permanently wear her heart on her sleeve and “Threads” has five more confirmations of that assertion. That said, any musician who still has the courage to display any part of her soul whilst maintaining, and even developing, a most notable degree of musical maturity will get my vote. If she keeps going like this, I will have to propose that she is declared a national treasure (even if these five songs left me wanting more).
