Ah! The art is strong in this one. I might even be tempted to regard “King Michael II and The Trial Of The Axe” by BBCC as an example of that long thought lost format known as the concept album.

The thirteen songs that make up “King Michael II and The Trial Of The Axe” and indeed both thematically consistent and stylistically coherent – much as the concept album was - yet there is also some pretty convincing evidence that their conceptual destination was not merely the ears but the one and only true drama platform that is the stage. BBCC are also undeniably quirky in their approach to music making with percussive patterns endless circling the distinctly analogue synth sounds and oddly indirect lyrics as if always, and determinedly, taking a different path to an existentially deconstructed end.

Music like this is has a strong curiosity value to me. Maybe it is the deliberately different approach to telling stories in song format that appeals. Maybe it is the downright oblique artistic intent that suggests tilting at windmills was more than just a construct pulled from the world of literature. BBCC aren’t actually so weird that they would scare hamsters nor are they so esoteric that only the truly dedicated followers of fashion could appreciate them. BBCC do their own things and should be commended for that and the listener, even if said listener was not actually tripping, will likely find themselves sufficiently interested to ponder what it all means. It is art, after all.
