You can’t really go wrong with a bit of dream pop even if it is of the Canadian variety and sundayclub duly tick all the genre expectation boxes and a few more with their self-titled debut album.

As might be expected, there is much in the way of introspection to be found in the lyrics of the twelve songs on this album. It is also true that the fuzzy sound expected of any self-respecting band in this genre is present and correct yet there is also a focus on matters modern that is somewhat expected for a band that would have many followers to whom the cardigan is their chosen fashion accessory. That approach does infuse much of what you hear with a certain degree of melancholy but, once again, your ears might well be distracted from death by internalisation by the combination of those wistful female vocals and properly constructed pop songs that make you want to sing along with “Sad Summer” being the song most likely to make you want to be in the band.

There is something appealing about sundayclub. I like to pretend that I don’t normally go for anything even close to dream pop yet it is undeniable that sundayclub do what they do with style and, if your desire is to dig deeper, you might find that special sonic something that resonates with you and you alone. This is, therefore, an album that sounds human in a world where such things can no longer be guaranteed.

Available from Paper Bag Records and Bandcamp.
