A Scottish trio has to be a good thing and I Will Take You Hunting are indeed a Scottish trio. There were, once, biscuits called Trio but they were long ago consigned to the supermarket shelves of yesterday while, in the here and now, I Will Take You Hunting - Steve Simms, Dave Martin and DJ Butterscotch - have a new album out called “Patterson Is A Liar And A Thief”.
“Patterson Is A Liar And A Thief” is comprised of twelve songs that are, in truth, devoid of chocolatey goodness and, indeed, any form of sugary subtlety has been abandoned to be replaced with aggressive guitar riffs, full on vocals and, of all things, loops and samples. Is this a bad thing? Not if you like a continuous sonic assault and, to their credit, I Will Take You Hunting manage to maintain a convincing illusion of angry, if not so young, men throughout with edgy, near punk, sentiments often creeping into their words. It would, of course, be unwise, in this day and age, to search for any deeper political message as no such thing would be found yet I Will Take You Hunting still sound like a band that have enough substance to make their point without simply relying on the impact of those well kent power chords.
“Patterson Is A Liar And A Thief” provides adequate proof that even the use of samples in the style of the past can be used to make some noise that might well keep your trendsetter ears awake in these days of endemic musical stasis. Add in the power chords (and an obscene amount of volume) and “Patterson Is A Liar And A Thief” starts to make a rewarding amount of sense.
