If you happened to be in your local record shop browsing for your next essential purchase and you found an album called “Pink Trash Chicken”, you would pick it up and look at it. You know you would and I would too. With a title like that, it is practically guaranteed that the music contained therein will be at least interesting and very probably eclectic. And, as it turns out, Lola Pony is nothing of not eclectic.
Eclectic. Yes, that’s the word. I’ve no idea where Lola Pony actually gets the recipe for her sonic soup as nothing here sounds like it came from the mainstream or, at least, not directly from the mainstream. Some stylistic decorations are indeed lifted wholesale from somewhere familiar but, in their deliberately unfocussed execution, each idea slides gracelessly into a wall made of cotton wool and memories of yesterday’s sunshine with only “Good Girl” getting close to the commercially viable finish line yet, even with that said, the rest of the songs on this album are so determinedly individualistic that they end up becoming, by some sorcery, rather endearing.
When the morning comes, Lola Pony will no doubt be found tap dancing on a psychedelically painted barge sailing down the river of joy on the way to whatever destination her artistic madness wants to get to. Like the man said, this time it’s creative and “Pink Trash Chicken” is most certainly creative. And, of course, eclectic…
