Call me sentimental if you like but my ears are rarely dissatisfied when a performer polishes up her voice and takes her songs borne of the inside and dips them in the well of eternal wistfulness. “Heavenly Bodies “ by Alex Amor is nothing if not wistfulness incarnate.

Of course, you can’t be wistful unless you have sentimentality to spare and there is no doubt, given the evidence found in the words and music that make up this album, that Alex Amor has connected her heart directly to the thesaurus of life. Certainly, many a pop princess of the past has walked those same pavements on the way to catharsis yet, by overlaying the murky alt pop sound over what would normally be a stroll through sensitive singer songwriter territory, she jumps up a level and grabs the opportunity to demonstrate that she has the literacy, if not quite the poetry, needed to tell it like it is. Reality is what it is and she sounds like she knows that from experience.

Whilst it would normally aggrieve me to admit to any fondness for any music that has been obviously seasoned with commercial sauce, Alex Amor and her wistful reflections on the mundane prove to be distinctly deserving of more attention than would be given to a passing acquaintance met on the last bus to Clydebank. “Heavenly Bodies” is therefore deemed worthy of some worship.

Best song : “Inside”

Verdict: Desirable.
