The blues is one of those timeless things and it is all but a certainty that the time honoured twelve bar groove will exist all the way from now to eternity with even the disconnected youth of today eventually finding the truth that is to be found in between those downtown chords. Talking of youth, seventeen year old Jake Soberlak has taken to walking that very traditional route with his debut album “I’m In Trouble”.
Of course, Jake Soberlak is not in any sort of trouble for he has surrounded himself with a solid selection of sidemen that understand the ways and means of his chosen musical style. There are, unsurprisingly, no deviances from the lyrical conventionality expected of the genre yet that straight down the line approach is balanced by the degree of respect that young Mr Soberlak has for chosen genre and that is the actual selling point for this album. People don’t expect the blues to go left, right and centre at will for the blues is what it always was and “I’m In Trouble” is undoubtedly an album that could be as much of yesterday as it is of today.
“I’m In Trouble” is a promising album and might be the start of what could be a long career touring the roots festival circuit and Jake Soberlak’s heart seems to be in just the right place to make that happen.
