Hannah O’Reilly, Susanna Macdonald, Marky:Boy of Destiny live at Liquid Ship in Glasgow

Tick tock went the clock. Time to crawl out of the gutter and do some of that reviewing activity that is so often mistaken for work. Maybe even time for some beer (ah, the novelty!). With all the enthusiasm of a hamster on Prozac, Bluesbunny headed off towards the Liquid Ship for a Free Candy Session featuring Hannah O'Reilly, Susanna MacDonald and Marky: Boy of Destiny.

OK, enough depression. Let's get to the music. First on was Hannah O'Reilly. Now, at Bluesbunny Towers we respect a woman who can handle her drink and Ms O'Reilly proclaimed that she had been out on the lash since lunchtime. An opportunity for some bawdy drinking songs, perhaps? None of that, of course. Instead we got songs with lyrical content that reflects the "Sex and the City" obsessions of the modern lady. To give credit where it is due, she has a big voice and knows how to use it and "Aftermath" stood out from the rest of her set.

It's time to be impressed. Come to think of it, it has been a while since this Bluesbunny was impressed. Susanna MacDonald is from Edinburgh and she proved to be something of a treasure. In a world overflowing with earnest singer songwriters, she proved to be an intense and involving performer. Her songs had a sense of the dramatic mixed into them.  She went from controlled emotions to wild outbursts of musical fury all in the same song. Even at her most restrained the middle class sensibilities of her songs of have an intelligence and poetry to them but it was her performance that sold it. She's a bit dangerous, this one. Make sure you find out why.

Then there was Marky:Boy of Destiny. Oh, and Spacepilot to keep him company on the stage. The two of them did a good natured line in polished folk rock with strong pop sensibilities. In fact, I thought I was having a Roddy Frame moment during "Why Is It When I Dream". No doubt about it, they do what they do well.

Well, that's enough for one day. Since a conclusion would be appropriate at this time, I'll take the opportunity to paraphrase an old saying. There are only two goods thing to come out of Edinburgh - the last train to Glasgow and Susanna Macdonald.

I'm off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of chicken pakora…
