Damn, it has to be the drink! I've just seen a woman play a saw. A saw. That's right. A tool for cutting wood can be used a musical instrument. The woman was Brigid Kaelin the song she played was the standard "Over the Rainbow". I'm impressed. She does a nice line in quirky songs as well with "Something Bad" being my particular favourite. Sharing the stage with her tonight is Peter Searcy - also, like Ms Kaelin, from Kentucky - and he makes it all look easy as he alternates between singing his own songs and backing up Ms Kaelin. She's a little bit country and he's a little bit rock 'n' roll but there's a whole lot of talent between them. Ms Kaelin also likes malt whisky and even managed to down a Lagavulin - not a beginner's whisky by any means - or two. Respect.
Further proof that all roads lead to Glasgow came from a visitor from Holland going under the name of The Light Brigade. One man and a guitar is a pretty common formula these days but he gave an intense performance with every word rendered with deadly seriousness. Or at least it seemed that way until he did an about turn and enticed the audience into singing along to "You Are My Sunshine". There was also a visitor from Edinburgh. Big Andy Tucker - you might know him as the lead singer of the now ex-band Dead Beat Club - did a turn as well. With his trademark tan leather jacket and a wee refreshment or three on a stool beside him, he remembered to sing "Broken Heels". That made me happy.
It's a busy night tonight so let's also mention local boys Drew Gardner, who is turning into a bit of a working class hero with his crowd pleasing set, and Davie Boyle who drew the short straw and got to play last. Despite this, he put the effort into impressing the rapidly diminishing crowd.
As I write this review something else occurred to me. There's one good thing about Saturday morning hangovers. They give you a reason to have beer for breakfast.
