Derek Meins Peggy Sue and Alessi’s Ark live at Pivo Pivo in Glasgow

Every time I visit Pivo Pivo, it seems to be ladies' night. That is just fine by me. Derek Meins isn't female but, since he put on such a good show, I'll acknowledge him too!

Now, young Alessi - known better as Alessi's Ark - comes across as a shy, fragile and dreamy young girl but give her the stage and a guitar and she'll have you in a trance. Playing songs as short as herself, Alessi's set was nonetheless gripping. "They're really small…songs!", to quote her. Silence in the room should be mandatory when this young girl takes the stage for missing Alessi is missing someone special.

London trio Peggy Sue follow no paths already carved, playing a brand of blues and soul that is entirely their own. Already popular with tonight's crowd, it's easy to envision this act going far. Rosa and Katy juggle a range of instruments and percussion - including washboard! - while Olly reinforces the beat at the back. Whether it's one of their own (such as "Pupils Blink") or a cover (who expected Missy Elliot's "All in My Grill"?), these girls do it with ease. I swear, if they ever try a Mojo Nixon song, I might just die of happiness.

Last on was Derek Meins, who knocked people off their feet with "Oh You Pretty Woman". Good start! There is a line from "Gin Song" - "if the ocean was made out of gin, maybe I'd learn how to swim" - that is mysteriously difficult to banish from my head. Maybe I don't want to forget it.

There was no confidence shortage as Derek and his band tore through an engaging folk-rock set. His set, however compelling, was just over half the length of that of Peggy Sue - the anticipated headliners - so his position on the bill ought to be questioned. The quality of his set, however, need not be questioned.

Another good night. Oh, the price paid in the morning, though! Heavier than that of any imported lager!
