One constant that makes live music so exciting is the element of surprise. Bands can't erase mistakes like they might in the studio nor can they pause to sober up. What you see (and what you hear) is what you get. That said, little went wrong as The Hussy's, Miss the Occupier, and the Nanobots rejoiced at this fundraiser for the Glasgow Feminist Network. No, I'd never heard of it either.
It's always nice to see a band put in a little effort. The Nanobots might limit their opportunities with their strictly sci-fi approach but they may also manage to convert unbelievers with their spacey pop-rock sounds. Evoking thoughts of The Rezillos at times, this quirky duo put on a decent show that appealed as much visually as it did musically. Prepare to be surprised by this act.
By the awkward looks on the faces of those around me, they were clenching their muscles in order to prevent themselves from dancing to Miss the Occupier. Fronted by the radiant Roz Davies, their set was never going to be dull. There's work still to be done, but Miss the Occupier are every bit as hip and cool as anybody in the charts nowadays. I'm not saying they are great, but they could be.
And then we had The Hussy's. Fronted by big-haired blonde, Fili, The Hussy's didn't fail to deliver the catchy pop music they are so renowned for in Glasgow. Lyrically, they don't impress, and Fili is no Debbie Harry, but nowadays pop music need be nothing but catchy. In that respect, tonight's performance was no disappointment. This band is surely a shoo-in for support slots with bigger acts, and for bigger shows of their own.
Well, that about covers it. A decent-sized crowd in Glasgow. Must be a Friday night.
