Some Boy, The Dirty Violets and Ben Sturrock live at Nice and Sleazy in Glasgow

Woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head… You get the picture. BluesBunny is out on the town again. Glasgow. Another almost random selection of bands. Ticket says one thing. The venue says another. Who knows the truth? Would the truth involve Ben Sturrock, The Dirty Violets and Some Boy? It just might.

First up was Ben Sturrock. It's been a while since the Bluesbunny last encountered him. For a one man and a guitar outfit, he did well and would easily be placed near the front of the scruffy singer songwriter pack in dear old Glasgow. He's got the confidence. He's got a bundle of fans many of whom would, quite frankly, stop traffic. He's even got some decent songs. He's not enough to distract you from your beer but maybe sometime soon he will. He also does the best Tracey Chapman impersonation in town. Just close your eyes…

Next to attempt to capture our attention were The Dirty Violets. Yes, it's been a while again. Since some battle of the bands heat in Falkirk in fact. They've got an older sister in attendance tonight and she says that they are great. Not that she's biased, of course. Anyway, it turns out that she was right for they've got crowd pleasing songs and singer Craig McInnes has got the voice to deliver them straight to you. Definitely a band that deserves your attention.

Headlining tonight were Some Boy. This most mercurial of Glasgow bands were showing off new songs tonight and proved that the (almost mythical) "Ten Bob Recordings" album was no flash in the pan. The benefits of practise were clearly evident and this is the best performance I have heard from them. Al Wright's vocals came from the heart and many of those new songs are set to find the audience in a stadium (or they should be if there is any justice in the world). Yes, someone in Glasgow is writing big songs again!  A band destined for world domination? I hope so.

The scorecard for tonight put Some Boy - to use a technical term - a "bawhair" ahead of The Dirty Violets.  Both bands gave sterling performances.

Anyway, let us ponder rock chicks for a moment. As the oldest and wisest Bluesbunny, I was explaining the phenomenon to the youngest Bluesbunny. He looked puzzled until, right on cue, a stunning blonde did a bit of impromptu pole dancing around one of the pillars in Sleazy's basement. A bonus point goes to Some Boy as it happened during their set. There is a God!
