UK Subs, The Terrors, The Red Eyes, The Prairie Dugs and Fire Exit live at Ivory Blacks in Glasgow

A long, long time ago, unemployment and discontent were two words scarcely omitted from daily newspapers. People had little to do. Many formed punk rock acts and channelled their aggression through music. Fast-forward to Glasgow, 2008. Unemployment and discontent are once more scarcely omitted from daily newspapers. People don't know what to do. Many form shitty indie acts. Not quite the same thing, is it? Thank God for the UK Subs! The seemingly irrepressible punks were back in town to conduct some angst-ridden chaos.

First on were The Terrors. Wonder if they are Dundee United fans? I'm always uncertain about female-fronted punk acts (for most pale in comparison to Wendy O. Williams) but they were certainly no bubblegum act.

More local punk came in the shape of The Red Eyes. This act has done well with support slots in the past and it was easy enough to understand why. Simple and effective. And loud.

The Prairie Dugs are not entirely unknown to Glasgow either. These guys laid down a set of venomous street punk and got the crowd geared up for the UK Subs, if they weren't already.

In the case of Fire Exit, there's not a lot that need be said. Pure quality!

Now, Charlie Harper may be as old as your grandpa but it did not impact on a furious set by the UK Subs. Flanked by his much-younger comrades, fans got just what they expected. Heads knocked, people fell - a good time was had by all!

Shows such as this remind people that they have a heartbeat. As does late night pizza. One after the other? Dangerous thinking!
