Two Bluesbunnies. One suffering from lack of sleep and the other just back from Montreux. Add some beer and you've got all you need for a Friday night. Oh, and some music too but tonight was one of those nights where the audience out performed the performers.
El Mentiroso were on first and did a sort of MTV Unplugged style set. Cut down to an acoustic duo, their solid and convincing rock songs suffered a bit. That said, there was more than enough left to make a man curious to hear the same songs performed at maximum volume.
Next on was Sharon Martin. Last time I saw her, she was backing up Mick Drain and this time she was hiding behind her guitarist. A strange approach to performance but it turns out there was a story behind it all. Something involving a bit of girl on girl audience conflict apparently. Best to wait until a better day before judgement is passed on Ms Martin.
Last on - and also the somewhat surprised headliner for the evening - was Liam Cairns. He started off doing the intense singer songwriter (albeit with Joey Ramone hair) thing before switching tactics and picking up the pace. Demonstrating that confidence and a decent tune or two is all you really need, he took first place tonight. He also had the first (and very demonstrative) stalker that I have seen at this venue too. Class!
