Eftreklang and Nancy Elizabeth live at The Oran Mor in Glasgow

It's a sorry point to make, but Halloween seems to make people look less ugly. Less, but still ugly. Here's hoping. But now to the point. It's Friday night. Time for some music. The Oran Mor - home of the overpriced Guinness - played host to Danish outfit Efterklang.

Nancy Elizabeth began proceedings nicely. My initial reaction was that this young Scandinavian has a beautiful voice. This was to be disproved later, as Ms Elizabeth in fact hails from Wigan. However, her set of quiet delight was a joy to hear. Almost singing in a whisper a times, Nancy seems a delicate soul, and through that comes her sound.  Almost haunting.

It wasn't long before Efterklang took to the stage. From the off it was clear that they weren't the sort to be toiling in 4/4 time. What Efterklang offered was much more complex approach to composition, thankfully, without compromising melody. Playing mostly from their 2007 "Parades" release, there wasn't scope for sing-a-longs, but to take in the sounds and witness the spectacle onstage was terrific in itself.

Efterklang are not quite an orchestra, but this army of moustache-sporting Danes nonetheless demonstrated a fantastic show of musical architecture. A positive lack of convention and at the same time a warm appreciation for their audience meant that everyone would be going home satisfied. Or going to the pub satisfied.

Two fine acts and it's only 10pm. Still time to cause some trouble.
