JJ Gilmour live at The Georgian Hotel in Coatbridge

They call him Jinky. Well, they would as he is from Coatbridge and tonight the man from The Silencers returned to The Georgian Hotel to fill a function suite with fans for a run through his not inconsiderable canción collection.

Playing to a friendly audience brought out the best in him and, with the gallus aplomb issued by default to every son of Coatbridge who has achieved escape velocity, he filled the gaps between songs with a selection of recollections pulled from his time in the spotlight. Yet, it was always about the songs and, when you have been about as long as Jinky has, you will have plenty of those close to hand and mind. The singalong crowd pleasers - “Sylvie” and “I Can Feel It”, duly inspired the expected massed chorus and, with the support of his two - much younger - on stage cohorts, the combined musical energy could have powered a Tesla all the way to Lesmahagow and back.

Jinky they call him and Jinky he duly was. That was just what the audience wanted and, as the man with the plan is prone to say, you really can’t keep a good musician down. Jinky is the proof of that.
