Peter Parker and the Dirty Cuts live at The Captain's Rest in Glasgow

You've got the wonder about the kind of people that spend their evenings in dank basements. Well, if you're the kind of person that seeks out good music then dank basements are indeed the place to be. Hence my presence in the basement of the Captain's Rest.

First on were The Dirty Cuts. A new band - to my ears at least - they proved to be both entertaining and popular with the audience. Gruff, almost flat vocals were held aloft by pounding drums and some particularly impressive angry, angular guitars. The band kind of reminded me of Ned Collette if he had decided to go a bit retro.

Shortly thereafter, Peter Parker took to the stage. It's single launch night for them as they cast the delightful "Swallow the Rockets" out to the masses. Last time I saw this band, they were shambolic yet charming. This time it was obvious they had been practising and their set of short songs was delivered with focussed energy. Fortunately, the band had lost none of their charm and it wasn't long before stupid grins became the norm amongst the audience. Or maybe it was something to do with Roz's alluring eyelashes. Whatever way you look at it, Peter Parker are a band that makes people happy and that's a very good thing to be in these depressing times.
