Eightball, 2 Thirds of Youth and My Actions Your Exit live at Cosmopol in Glasgow

So you get this idea in your head. You've got to find out what's happening in Glasgow. Find out what's new, that sort of thing. Six bands on the bill at Cosmopol. That'll do nicely. Get the old head count up. Only three of them have pulled out. The best laid plans…

Still, at least it wasn't a waste of time. Take Eightball for a start. Sure, they could have done with a bit more time in the rehearsal room and they did stray a bit close to the black hole of late seventies fusion rock but they were also a bit different from the usual Glasgow rock band. Gruff vocals counterpointed by walking keyboard figures turned their rock songs into something that even old fogies would like. That means the song were melodic, by the way, and the musos amongst you would not fail to be impressed by the fleet fingered bass player Andy.

2 Thirds of Youth were on next. Five strong, this band pretty much ticked all the boxes expected of your modern indie rock band. In fact, you can just imagine them on the soundtrack of Hollyoaks or maybe even Skins. They gave a polished performance that surely won them many new friends and I have to admit to being especially impressed by guitarist/vocalist Alistair Robertson.

My Actions Your Exit also stayed true to the indie rock genre right down to the obligatory haircuts. Again, the band were polished performers though their songs were a shade ahead of the previous band. In fact, such was the buoyancy of their performance, they could easily be a mistaken for a band from the good old US of A. I'm not complaining because it isn't a crime to give the public what they want.

Plan B? Time for another beer…
