Salon Society are a band with a conscience. That much is clear. So, despite being prime exponents of art rock in Scotland, they pack a fair old punch into their lyrics. "Preaching the Blues" is therefore not so much a love song as a why can't there be love song.

There's a deftness to the words that leaves a certain, no doubt deliberate, ambiguity as to their true meaning but all that would be meaningless if the music didn't hit the mark. The band lay down a barely restrained backing track and then throw some precisely regimented guitar riffs and bluesy harmonica in just to add a bit of swagger. Sitting atop all that - the cherry on the cake, if you like - are the alternately sultry and theatrical vocals of Roxanne Claxton. It's safe to say that this is a cut above your average three minute pop song.

You should check Salon Society out live as well. They're hard as nails.
