There's that thing about the well intentioned amateur musician. They might get the feel right but the limitations of their ability can soon become obvious. Now, I can't claim to be an expert on the piano blues but Fingers Delrey sounds like he really knows what he is doing.
Instrumental albums are tough to review as you've lost half the source of your words through the lack of any lyrics. However, it is abundantly clear that the necessary sense of rhythm for this kind of music is present and correct. With the scant biographical info - I know little more than that in real life Fingers Delrey was a session guy for the likes of Maceo Parker - the music has to stand on its own. While he doesn't have quite the delicacy of James Booker, his quite impressive dexterity keeps your interest alive and drives those self composed songs right along. In particular, I took a fancy to the old time charms of "Lazy Lucy".
Mind you, I was still left with the feeling that the album really needed was a sultry minx to belt out the blues and keep Fingers company. Nonetheless, it's a very enjoyable listen.
