I kind of like debut albums. Although they may be rough around the edges, you know that they won't suffer from that difficult second album syndrome. So it turned out to be with Salon Society's debut album "Promenade"

Being familiar with their live set has its advantages. I've previously accused - if that's the right word as there is no actual guilt involved- Salon Society of being art house rock and, in these more polished versions, it seems I was right. As carefully assembled as these songs are, it is clear to see that these would easily transfer to the floodlit arena. Roxanne Claxton is very much the front woman in the live environment yet here she shows a surprising subtlety and elegance that makes listening to these songs more enjoyable than that end of the evening chicken kebab. Controversial that maybe, but this is quality after pub listening. Don't believe me? Try "Star Crossed Lovers" for a starter then have the total theatre of "Jasmine" for the main course and round things off with "Preaching the Blues" for dessert. It's a satisfying meal.

"Promenade" is a very promising debut album. There is plenty of evidence of song writing ability and, with the equally evident flair for the dramatic, this album stands tall. I had hoped this would be a good one and I'm glad to say it is.
