You show a man a sleazy blonde and he will want to take her home. You show a man a bit of vinyl that goes around at 45rpm and he will likewise want to take it home. I should really stay out of records shops as I can't go in to one and leave alone. That pretty much explains how this 12" EP by Brilliant Colors got to come home with me. Sleazy blondes sometimes come home with me too. Not very often but occasionally.
There's a subtle pleasure to be gained from putting the needle into the groove. All sorts of musical enchantments are known to escape following this action. This time a beaten and battered take on C86 with anger management issues fell out of the speakers and took a swing at me. It's all very lo-fi with permanently edgy guitars stridently striding over a thumping bit of tribal drumming. Topping it all off are some wondrous, and often off key, girly vocals.
I should hate this record. I really should. Unfortunately, I can't. Maybe it is that mix of dumb insolence and anger that charmed me? Most probably it was as these songs made me smile. Then again, I liked The Vaselines so maybe that isn't that much of a surprise.
Technical stuff now - this slab of vinyl contains the tracks from a deleted EP and a deleted single. It also contains a bonus track called "I Start With Your Name".
If I have to sum up this EP, I think it is safe to say that it's a blitzkrieg bop!
