Right, what have we here? An album from a man on a mission it would seem. "Suitcase + Stretcher" is the debut album from Nick Storey who hails originally from New Zealand but now peddles his wares on the streets of London.
One thing is for certain - Nick Storey isn't here to scare you. In fact, this is one of the most likeable albums that I've heard in quite a while exuding, as it does, a palpable warmth and charm with everything being put together in a very tasteful and restrained way. Stylistically, the title track follows the polished urban folk style of American bands like the Getocowboys while there is undoubted mainstream appeal in the mellow charms of "Inside Everything" or Heal & Bind". It's probably a nod to the popularity of things Americana - or maybe a bit of intentional humour - but the oddly accented laconic drawl that powers songs like "Leaving The Light Show" brought a smile to my face too.
All in all, this is a very promising album especially as it is Nick Storey's first. He has taken an understated approach to the recording and the result is all the better for that. There are more than enough songs to catch and keep your attention and he maintains a remarkably consistent level of quality throughout. Easy on the ear, this is the kind of album that makes friends easily.
