Just when you thought that the streets of Glasgow had been overrun by hordes of identical indie rock bands with nothing more on their minds than those three power chords, along comes Annie Stevenson with this unassuming four track EP.
Even when they do an indie rock impersonation - as with "Get Off The Street" - Annie Stevenson show a far greater imagination in their arrangements and a much more subtle use of guitar than you could reasonably expect of a Glasgow band. That's perhaps the key thing on show - a willingness to build complexity into their music and thus escape the limitations of any genre you might pigeonhole them in. Certainly, the post Revolver Beatles meets psych-pop feel of "Country Killer" and "I'm The One You Hold" easily interests your ears while "TV Took My Soul" demonstrates that Nick Scroggie and Tom Boyd have the talent to produce the kind of wordplay that bears comparison with the Jarvis Cockers or Damon Albarns of this world.
The sound quality does the band no favours but that's the only quibble I've got with these four songs. Four songs out of four is an excellent result.
