I’ve noticed an increase in the weight of the Bluesbunny mailbags as more and more rock music makes its way up here. Standing out from the crowd this time is Berkshire based rock metal band Neverify with their Species EP.

A rock-metal hybrid suggests much volume and not a lot of subtlety will be the order of the day but, fortunately, you get more than that here for Neverify aren’t scared of tempo changes and cranking up the camp factor with singer Dan Bignell sounding like he was born to live his life on stage.  Springing surprises comes naturally to this band as they move from psych pop lightweights into road burning rock gods in “Avatar”.  “Manumission” gets even more theatrical like the band had a vision of an alternative universe where Pantera do pantomime to make ends meet. That sense of fun also pervades “Union” but I was also particularly impressed by the subtlety of the musicianship that proved that you can go big without being stupid and, whilst it is the most conventional song here, “Voyeur” is enlivened by more than its fair share of twists and turns.

If you are going to make something out of depleted uranium then you’d better put a big pink bow around it just so you don’t scare people and that’s what Neverify have done here.  The riffs could punch a hole in a tank while the vocals dance daintily around you in the best showbiz tradition and I have to say that I enjoyed this EP a lot more than I was expecting to. Any EP that leaves you smiling is a good EP and I’m still smiling yet. Go Dan Go!
