This is possibly not the best music to enjoy with a hangover and writing this at 6am on a summer’s morning isn’t the best of plans in any case. Nonetheless, the job has to be done and it’s not like Edinburgh metal band Dead At The Scene haven’t made the effort with their Sharktopus EP.

Admittedly, the opening song “DAAE” runs straight down the genre motorway something like Napalm Death after a trip to Norway – not subtle at all. It’s all in the wrist action however and “Echoes” turns the tables on your expectations with the voice of Satan suddenly suppressed by an elegant, sophisticated and (dare I say it?) delicate expedition into melodic mainstream rock that continues into “Fireworks”. You can’t do that sort of thing unless you are serious about your music. The jagged and dissonant “Turns Out He’s Luke’s Father” – who brought Star Wars into this? – pumps the volume back up before “Paint the Sky” provides an uneventful finish to this EP.

Looking at the eyecatching sleeve artwork, I reckon that there is a concept behind these songs. Or maybe not. No matter, as it is clear that this band is not short on ability or ideas. I don’t think they have found their own voice yet but, equally, I don’t doubt that they will.

Available as free download from the band's website.
