Well it isn’t Americana like the press release says – which is a good thing in my book – and, in fact, Tina Lie’s album “Free Enough to Fall” is more of modern blues album much in the style of Teresa James. That means Ms Lie isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.
There’s certainly no shortage of grit or honesty on show here. Ms Lie sounds real and convincing unlike so many modern day pretenders. Rock and country influences are much in evidence throughout too and that works out pretty well too with “Twilight Hour”, for example, bringing forth favourable comparisons with my personal favourite Jenny Haan. Though clearly capable of rocking out with the best of them, Ms Lie shows her true class when bringing life to more mundane songs like “Solid Ground” and really sinks her teeth into “Winter Moon” turning it into the top track on this album.
When you feel the need for music that is a bit classy and delivered with the conviction of someone who has actually lived a life then Tina Lie’s album could be just what you were looking for. Thumbs up to Byron House’s sensitive production too, by the way.
