There are times when you wonder if a band is trying to sabotage themselves or if they are instead enjoying an in joke that they are unwilling to share with the class. There just has to be some cunning plan behind this EP from Scottish band The Leads.
I had a hard time distinguishing the songs from each other and indeed from any indie rock/power pop hybrid band and when playing the last track, “Jarface”, I thought I was suffering from the early onset of dementia as I realised that I could not actually remember any of the three previous tracks. That’s even more surprising as I was honestly awed by the comical singing voice of David Brown. I’m sure that you don’t need to fake a Scottish accent when you come from Scotland but his remarkably irritating attempt – complete with rolled “aaahrrrrsss” and nasal nedness – reached a new nadir.
Like I said, I don’t know what this band’s cunning plan is but I don’t think that it will involve world domination.
