Let’s get through the facts first. Your Neighbour The Liar is a four piece band (Jamie McDonald
Andy McKenzie, Kyle McPartlin and David Tan) from Edinburgh who, on this three track EP, are intent on doing their take on the whole Scottish indie rock thing.
The first thing that strikes you when listening to this band’s songs is that Frightened Rabbit must be the most influential band about these days for this band, like so many others, follow said band into the deeply meaningful and artier side of town. In fact, “Guilt” could be a Frightened Rabbit demo and is pretty much what you’d expect of a band following in their footsteps.
The other two tracks show a notable improvement with “Harbour” standing out by balancing the off-key male vocals against a purposeful if understated guitar making the end result closer to an angst ridden Deacon Blue than anything else. “2009” is not quite to the same standard but the dramatic strengths of the arrangement again offset the somewhat strained vocal intensity of the singer.
As such bands go, Your Neighbour The Liar put on a very decent show here.
