Besides angst, we also have a bit of an obsession with jangly guitars here in dear old Glasgow and Room 39 (their name apparently not inspired by North Korean money laundering operations) seem keen to reinforce that perception with the five songs on their self titled EP.
Poised somewhere between The Byrds and the Strawberry Alarm Clock with their neat little lo-fi harmonies counterpointed by psyched out guitars, this band bring a bit of California soul to the proceedings. Oh, and a bit of smacked out grooviness if “Oh Elaine” happens to tickle your ears. The emphasis, as you might have gathered by now, is on the melodic side of things and that goes a long way to covering the deficiencies of the rather scratchy sound.
Whilst there is nothing here that I haven’t heard before, Room 39 (Iain O’Donnell, Mark Hinds and Kenny Campbell) do a good job here of evoking sunnier times.
