Do my ears deceive me? Do I detect significance? A social conscience, perhaps. Trim The Barber pass themselves off as post punk so that might well be the case as the last remnants of punk original style have all but been asphyxiated in the current atmosphere of apathy.
Rebellion, however, ain’t what it used to be. Spinning up the necessary anger isn’t really too likely these days but, to their credit, Trim The Barber manage to effectively substitute a square peg in around hole feeling to decorate the audio complexities of “Free Falling” and consequently emulate a laconic, over orchestrated take on Felt. It’s deep and you know it.
“Now The Joke On You” takes a something of a stylistic right run into conventional indie rock territory with only it’s art school sensibilities and Clash deference saving it from falling over into parody. Now, that might have been the true intention of the song but it walks a fine line above a cauldron of pretension and only just escapes a scalding.
There’s potential here without a doubt but this is perhaps a band that would benefit from the setting of defined musical objectives.
