There’s a place that I never want to go and it is called the middle of the road. Scandinavian singer Maini Sorri’s EP brought a fear induced sweat to my brow as it swerves, like a drunk driver, right down the middle the road leading to mediocrity.
It doesn’t take long for the cheap, plastic backing tracks to grate and for the inelegant words (at least of the four songs sung in English) to induce a deep sleep. Ms Sorri’s voice is pleasant enough but she brings little to the songs - such as they are – and she struggles with the sheer awkwardness of the words - (from “I Shouldn’t Have Trusted You”) “ …Truth is you are selfish and a phoney, I shouldn’t have trusted you and your baloney”. Those cringeworthy lyrics will never, ever, be mistaken for poetry.
Oh, there’s a song in her native tongue as well but it is only a little less dull. Having kicked this EP about for a bit, it occurred to me that this is the kind of unimaginative “music” that might just find a home on Saturday night television. Is there a bigger insult than that?
