Lost in music, lost in space or just lost in New York? Takka Takka have provided us with an album that sits just left of centre with “Migration”. Positively arty at times, it spins a web of influences that are more cultural than musical.
It is the kind of album that you might find in your more esoteric record shop. In fact you might find it anywhere the beard strokers might shop. Relaxing to listen to it is not and at times - like “Fall Where You Stand” -it is almost claustrophobic. “Lions In The Waves” likewise crushes into you despite its acoustic approach, leaving you feeling like you have been taken down into the deep, dark underground while “(The Optimists Were Wrong)” takes the minimalist and industrial electronic approach like a soundtrack cue for a Metropolis remake.
All in all, this is a very urban (urban in the sense of from and of the big city) album that holds a resolutely downbeat course avoiding anything other than the briefest visits to a port of happiness. Takka Takka have an undoubtedly an effective album here but I would also say that your enjoyment of it is unavoidably linked to your mood and I can see quite a few fans of intelligent indie rock bands like Frightened Rabbit needing to call the Samaritans after exposure to it.
