Just when you thought it was safe to go out in the streets of Glasgow again, up pops another band with a strange name and a desire to make you eat brown bread. Zoobizaretta are that band and they sound so wholesome they must be good for you.
“Foam and Leachate” would seem to be their debut album and it proved to be the kind of warm and mellow collection of songs that should find make the band many friends and perhaps ones previously entranced by the likes of Frightened Rabbit or Arcade Fire. Let’s consider what makes the album interesting. Well, you’ve got the male lead vocals that seem to have been held deliberately at a near flatline emotional level for the duration of this album. Then, in contrast, you’ve got an almost orchestral backing band that supply a controlled energy that lifts songs like “I Thought You Looked Familiar” and “Ridiculous” way higher than you would expect. However, the cherry on the cake, so to speak, was the glorious female vocals that weaved new patterns on every song that they touched with “You Say I Say” standing out as the song of the album.
Having had the opportunity to listen the album a few times now, I’ve now got over my irritation at deadpan guy leaving the handbrake on and now have to admit that I actually enjoyed “Foam and Leachate”. Now I’ll go and find out what a “leachate” is – hope it is something dirty. Or at least something you can spread on brown bread.
