There I go again referring to the “Glasgow Sound” and thinking that it might be a good thing when it isn’t. Barring a very few interesting bands, your average indie rock band here sounds just like any of its contemporaries. And so to The Patriots who, with this single, prove themselves to be pretty much what you would therefore expect.
“Cold War” betrays all the usual influences (Oasis, Libertines etc) in a song that just doesn’t stand out from the crowd in any way whatsoever making it an odd choice for a single. It is a song that could have been written or performed by any number of bands from this part of the world.
The guitar driven “Time Is On My Side” doesn’t fare much better. Nothing wrong with singing about a girl and the song itself is sung nicely enough but, again, there is little here to stick in the mind. Likewise, the clumsy mixing and production (hey! let’s make everything loud…) doesn’t help matters here either rendering the final result generic.
A bit of a disappointment really from what is a decent live band.
