What’s that old saying? Never mind the quality, feel the weight! Perhaps unfair to June Madrona but this EP was a hefty bit of green vinyl.
Right, that’s the entrée over so on to the music. With but guitars, flute and melodica to accompany their voices, this three piece band (Ross Cowman, Danielle Chiero and Micah Ellison) aren’t aiming to blow your eardrums. Instead, they take a naturalistic approach where the mistakes get left in and, to tell the truth, they get away with it. The songs display a pleasing sentimentality and wry humour with “The Serious Baby” standing out amongst the, no doubt deliberate, normality of the words and even at their most metaphorical (“Frog Prince”), there are no real big points being made.
Pressing quality was very good and the single was presented in a high quality gatefold sleeve. There was no mastering credit but inspection of the runout grooves suggested that it was an in-house DMM cut at Recordpressing.com. Tracks 3 and 4 on the “B” side were reversed on the review copy.
