Another day, another review. Or perhaps trial might be a better word? Yes, let’s call it a trial because I’m in a judgemental mood. This time it is the turn of Lanarkshire band Miscued Vein to present their evidence at the trial of their six track self titled debut mini album.

So, they have six shots at saving themselves from the gallows of mediocrity that is so often the target of indie rockers in this part of this world. Let’s start at the beginning and the first song “Triplet of Ugly Sisters” readily establishes this band’s radio friendly rock credentials while further evidence that said song is no flash in the pan is soon found in the sing-along charms of “Fat Lady Thing”. Subsequently “Out Of My Head” neatly nicks a classical motif before climbing onboard the pomp wagon in an earnest effort to get you waving your lighters in the air before the tempo shifting “Merciful Heart” shows that the band can step away from the norm. Fresh ideas prove harder to come by in the dull by comparison “Healing Touch” and “Pray” but, on balance, the verdict is that Miscued Vein can be spared the hangman’s noose this time.

This mini album is a very decent effort from a new band but, ultimately, these songs are let down by the clumsy production and poor sound which has the unfortunate side effect of leaving Miscued Vein sounding like way too many of their contemporaries. That’s a bit of a shame as they clearly have the ability to stand out from the crowd.
