There must be something in the water Brighton that encourages unconventionality for that is where Samsara hail from and they are not exactly your average band. Taking some solidly ska and reggae influences right to the edge with the kind of abandon beloved of jazz musicians and mixing it with near gypsy levels of passion, Samsara edge their way to the nirvana that I would imagine most wedding bands would go to after a lifetime of doing Robbie William’s covers snapped them.
Samsara sound like they might sometime in the past have been ordinary but after a massive transfusion from an inspired record collection just turned left at the next corner of inspiration and started enjoying themselves. Witness the sheer dance floor bounce of “No Man’s An Island” or “Mescalito”. Wonder at the inspired transformation of mellow civilisation into a ska jumpathon that is to be found in “Wandering Minstrels”. Fun and musicianship all in one place at one time!
Not only refreshing to the ears but likely to encourage your feet to start moving, “The Great Unravelling” holds itself together so much better than most. John, I’m only dancing!
