Lorraine McCauley has one of those voices that soothes you and she writes songs that touch you even if you don’t quite know why. Her words have the simple poetry of a folk musician yet she also concurrently displays the emotional intensity of the best in singer songwriters.
Her “Haunt Me” EP is her debut official release and features her band The Borderlands. As bands go, they are of the most subtle kind providing the kind of understated support that Ms McCauley’s voice benefits from. That’s not to say that they don’t shine for they do with sensitive and elegant fiddle of Nick Jenkins, in particular, standing proud.
However, the spell is cast by Ms McCauley’s voice. At times, positively winsome yet at other times almost ethereal, she sings like the kind of woman that you find in dreams. As if part of an approaching obsession, “Waiting For” surrounds you with such warmth that you actually feel the need to seek her out while the title track “Haunt Me” swirls its magic in the manner of the finest folk music. That subtlety – for want of a better word – gives these four songs a timeless quality. They don’t really belong in today or yesterday but they still seem relevant. No small feat, I’d say.
