Hey, another debut album! This time it is from Dane Drewis, who was formerly in a band called Cuesta Drive, and it is indeed a mellow musical gift that he offers us. Reminiscent of easy going r&b – in the classical sense of the term – musicians like Eric Lindell, he provides proof positive that he knows his way around a melody.
So, it is no surprise songs like “Friday Night” and “Full Of It” smile sweetly at you and cause an unconscious nodding of the head. The effect continues with the “Sweet Music” before “Get Level” puts a bit of a spring in your step. Mr Drewis has a decent voice and does most of the song writing here too so it is reasonable to assume that he knows what direction he is taking his music and that is perhaps what stands out most about this album. Or to be technically correct, doesn’t stand out.
The most significant thing that I note about this album is that it feels like it has been targeted directly at the middle of the road. It is nicely played and that mellow groove has its undoubted attractions but - and it is a personal opinion - I’m just not sure that could grow to love music that wouldn’t offend my mother. One day, I’m sure that I’ll be ready for that pipe (herbal only, of course) and slippers but not today.
