Naming your band after a shuttlecraft in Star Trek is a clear sign that you aren’t aiming for street credibility and success with the opposite sex. Come to think of it, naming your band after anything from Star Trek pretty much consigns you to the hell of geekdom. So, in releasing this album, could The Galileo 7 be trying to spin up the warp drive and blast off into coolness?
Hailing from that kingdom of English musical quirkiness called Medway, The Galileo 7 seem to have decided that, in order to be cool, that the future is actually the past and duly 14 songs are launched into outer space driven by a combination of Strawberry Alarm Clock anti matter and flowers in your hair fission. In the realms of science fiction anything can happen of course and it does seem that sixties’ San Francisco has been visited and plundered for some psychedelic inspiration. Certainly, you could imagine many of these songs – especially “The Sandman Runs Away” and “Run Baby Run” – booming out of a spaced out FM radio way back then.
“Are We Having Fun Yet?” is a likeable album that makes for an affectionate pastiche of the music of better times. That will probably be enough for most people.
