I was listening to the Clash the other day and “Should I Stay or Should I Go” just wouldn’t leave my mind. Seeking something to metaphorically cleanse the musical palette, I turned to Kelly Pettit’s album “These Days”.  Then I remembered my favourite axiom – “dare to be average”.

Reeling from the shock that someone seems – no doubt psychically – to have followed my advice, song after song of such extreme earnestness spun themselves off the CD into the air around my ears. The sleeve of this album should have provided a clue with not a single smile to be found in the many portraits of Mr Pettit and there’s just no joy evident in his music either. Each song seems designed to prove how serious a singer Mr Pettit is. He’s no mere X Factor/American Idol fame seeker, you see. He is here to make his mark and don’t you worry about any of the songs as you’ll easily remember them all as they are serious.

Mr Pettit manages to make Nashville AOR look controversial here which should, in a just society, earn him some sort of award. Bet he can cook a mean lasagne too.

“These Days” is available from CD Baby.
