Another American singer songwriter on the mainstream up and up, Matthew Genovese displays a notable degree of polish on his album “Change” even if naming said album “Change” proved a touch ironic considering that this is the kind of album that doesn't want to change anything.

Don’t get me wrong – this is all radio friendly stuff and you could easily imagine playing “The Girl I Knew Before" as you drive through San Bernadino or some such place. All nice and smooth but not quite interesting enough to drag your attention from the commercial breaks (which is just what a programmer would want). I would also imagine that it makes financial sense to write songs like “Tonight” just so can sell them as the soundtrack to a montage on a daytime soap.

Much shine in other words, but little in the way of soul and I doubt the likes of Peter Searcy will be unduly concerned by Matthew Genovese’s presence on the scene if this album is to be considered typical of his approach.
