It wondrous what comes through the letterbox at Bluesbunny Towers. Besides bowls of chilli and cakes, we also get music. Quite a lot of music actually. Some of it good, some it bad and some of it wholesome.
The Saturday Morning Canasta Club’s album is kinda wholesome. Besides being a musical collective, they use the profits from the sale of their CD to fund their Singing Wells project in Kenya. There you go, musicians with a conscience! Not the most common thing in the world (unless you’re called Bono).
The music, I hear you ask. Actually, it’s a very respectable set of mid range rock with hints of nostalgia (“No Bells”) and quirkiness (“Starin’ at My Shoes” and “Twirl”). Worthy of comment in these dark days, this is all feel good stuff and it is pretty much guaranteed to put a smile on your space. However, that’s not to say that trivial is the way of this collective. “Whisper”, for example, spins up the emotion like a back in the days Radiohead and the perfect middle of the road style of “Cold Light of the Day” also impresses. Best one to my ears, though, was the straight down the line rock of “Depth Perception”.
OK, it’s all in a good cause but it is actually good music too.
