And so from a basement in Baltimore there came two dimensionally shifted musicians called Matt Perzinski and Dave Gibson and verily they walked amongst us and made merry with our minds with their quarter past midnight musical meanderings. Taking the name New Mystikal Troubadours so that those of us not on their higher plane might remember them, they drew upon the energy of an alternate universe where the sixties never ended and consciousness altering medication had become a way of life.
The one they call Perzinski has a weirdly effective sort of non voice and the guitars, percussion and other worldly, and no doubt low budget, effects give this album the sonic polish of a worn out cassette being played in a Volkswagen Microbus. However, and I am happy to admit that science has been defied here, the New Mystikal Troubadours somehow get away with it. For a song that just about crumbles in front of you, “Absolving Melody” is positively hypnotic while “The Blessed Blues” even has a memorable melody (wasn’t expecting that!). “Another Wilde Song” reeks of confused decadence and my head just about gave up the ghost as the mantra of “Fragments of a Classical Afternoon” unfolded its weird message. You’ve got to let their music get to you but that’s what these unforced, organic, offbeat little tunes do.
The New Mystikal Troubadours. Just two guys doing their own thing and weird is the word for it. It’s enough to drive a man to drink or more drink if you have already had a drink. Available as a free download.
