So, time for the third season themed EP from Larkin Poe and it seems to indicates a change of direction. I don’t mean darker themes to suggest the changing of the seasons either but more an artistic route update to put them in the middle of the road and consequently make them perhaps more friendly to the Nashville music machine.

You still can’t argue with the truly adorable voices of Rebecca and Megan Lovell but, and perhaps envious of the success of those lesser talents in Nashville, they seem to have taken the safe route with the six songs on this EP. “Memories” and likewise “Horseshoes & Hand Grenades” do seem like proper Larkin Poe songs but delivered in a sort of flat way with much of the spirit and charm seemingly surgically removed. It could, of course, be a deliberate artistic decision – “Fall From A Tree” even suggests Stevie Nicks as a sonic reference – but the end result just sounds so safe.

Easy on the ear certainly, I suspect you’ll have a bit of trouble remembering these songs or the performances. However, Larkin Poe at average is still better than most of their musical competition can do at good. Maybe I was just expecting too much?
